History is ambivalent in its take of International Style architecture. While certain projects are widely recognized as architectural masterpieces, typical projects of the era are regarded with disdain. Often considered mundane, cold, and dehumanizing, modern architecture has not always passed the test of time. The case of the 2701 North Charles Street office building lobby in Baltimore City is an example of mixed success. The scale, proportions and overall configuration of the lobby remain relevant, but the lighting, materiality and palette are lackluster. Additionally, as with many projects of the era, aspects are functionally outdated, such as the revolving door entrance without egress doors and the ad-hoc placement of the security desk. In reimagining the function and character of the space, it was important to remain true to the modernist aesthetic while correcting its deficiencies.
The approach maintains the order and form of the original architecture while adding texture, color and lighting enhancements. New red, perforated metal, internally illuminated paneling lines the monotone stone finish of the existing core. The treatment enhances this most prominent feature of the lobby to become a focal point that is visible from the street, transforming the character of the entire building. Additionally, the new security desk is shifted to the corner, and a new entrance vestibule improves egress and life safety. Outside, underutilized paved areas are reprogrammed to be attractive community amenities. The parklet includes a free library and bench seating for neighbors to rest and enjoy reading. New railings and guards are used to refine the exterior in keeping with the color and materiality in the lobby to create a unified, layered sequence of entering. Together, these upgrades transform the building to become attractive and relevant to the contemporary city.
