Program:
Designed as a specialized energetics laboratory on a Naval research installation, the facility supports the development and testing of explosive ordnance within a highly controlled research environment. The single-story building is intentionally windowless in response to its programmatic, security, and operational requirements, resulting in an efficient and highly controlled interior organized around laboratories, support spaces, circulation, and dedicated service and loading areas. The straightforward building form reflects the technical nature of the program while carefully separating primary access, research functions, and servicing needs.
To give architectural expression to an otherwise utilitarian enclosure, the design introduces a perforated metal screen wall that wraps the upper portion of the building. Set away from the primary exterior wall, the screen creates a layered façade that filters light and shadow, adds visual depth, and establishes a more refined civic presence for the laboratory. Its vertical rhythm softens the scale of the windowless mass while allowing the building to retain the solidity appropriate to its mission. Contrasting masonry, metal panels, canopies, and screened service elements further articulate the elevations, creating a facility whose architecture communicates both the precision of scientific research and the specialized character of the work occurring within.
