Conferencing and education, Office, Library, Barber Shop, Micro Bank
Conceived as a catalyst for economic mobility and neighborhood investment, the Workforce Development Center provides a welcoming place where local residents can gain the skills, resources, and connections needed to enter and advance in the workforce. The building brings together flexible education and training rooms, conferencing spaces, a library, and administrative offices within an open, collaborative environment. Generous glazing and interconnected gathering spaces make the activities of the center visible, reinforcing a sense of accessibility and shared purpose while creating opportunities for informal interaction, mentorship, and community building.
At street level, a barber shop and microbank extend the mission of the center beyond the conventional classroom. Rather than functioning simply as commercial amenities, they are envisioned as active components of the job-readiness program. The barber shop can provide opportunities for vocational training, customer service experience, entrepreneurship, and professional grooming, while the microbank can introduce participants to financial literacy, banking, credit, savings, and the fundamentals of small-business development. Together, these programs create a more holistic approach to workforce development—recognizing that preparing for employment involves not only learning technical skills, but also building confidence, financial capability, professional networks, and pathways toward long-term economic independence.
