The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is designed as an immersive cultural and educational destination celebrating the working history, craft, ecology, and communities of the Bay. Exhibition galleries, event and learning spaces, gathering areas, and waterfront circulation are arranged to maintain a strong relationship between the museum’s collections and the surrounding harbor. Generous glazing, porches, terraces, boardwalks, and framed views extend the visitor experience beyond the galleries, allowing boats, docks, water, and the active museum campus to become part of the exhibition itself. Rather than functioning as an isolated object, the building is conceived as another working structure within the maritime landscape.
Architecturally, the museum borrows from the material logic and construction traditions of shipbuilding. Its elongated forms, repetitive structural bays, exposed framing, timber surfaces, metal skins, and precisely detailed connections recall the ribs, hulls, decks, and working sheds associated with boat construction. Roofs stretch outward like protective canopies, while linear circulation routes and broad stepped terraces evoke decks and piers overlooking the water. These references are intentionally abstract rather than literal, giving the museum a contemporary identity while grounding it in the craft and character of the Chesapeake Bay. The result is an architecture that feels both familiar and new—a modern museum shaped by the structures, materials, and traditions of the maritime culture it preserves.
